5 Ways to Avoid Dry Face Skin
Wear Sunscreen Every Day. Even if you work indoors or only find yourself outside for only short increments during the day (walk to your car, walk to the mailbox, walk your dog, etc.) those minutes add up. A small amount of sun exposure can dry skin out and cause irritation and redness. It’s a great idea to wear sunscreen every day, and it will add a layer of hydration that you probably need this time of year.
Bathe or Cleanse with Warm Water, Not Hot. While a hot relaxing bath is always tempting, hot water can strip our skin of all of its natural oils and leave face skin dry and tight. Consider instead taking a warm bath and cleansing with warm water and immediately adding a layer of moisturizer to help your skin retain the moisture.
Avoiding Synthetic Fragrances. Synthetic fragrances can cause significant dryness of the skin, especially our delicate facial skin. Most synthetic fragrances are have the carrier ingredient of alcohol, and that will increase your dry skin problem. Try to stick to natural plant based fragrances and products, especially in the winter months when we tend to suffer from dry skin more often than other times of the year.
Moisturize After Cleansing and Bathing. Once your pat your face with a soft towel (preferably cotton), add a layer of cream or moisturizer right away. It will seal in the hydration for softer more supple skin.
Drink Plenty of Water. When we drink water and keep our bodies hydrated, we significantly increase the moisture levels of our skin including our facial skin. Don’t risk dehydration, which can make it hard to keep skin suitably moisturized.
Use a Humidifier at Home and Work. Having a humidifier at home and/or at work is a fantastic idea. It can greatly increase the moisture levels in the air and keep our skin feeling comfortable and hydrated. If you don’t have a humidifier, consider tucking containers of water throughout the rooms you spend most of your time. You’ll see that in a couple of days that the water will diminish, which is a good sign because it means it’s evaporating into the air, and you’ll just need to replenish it a couple of times a week.
Avoid Harsh or Drying Soaps. It’s best to avoid sulfates and other harsh detergents all the time, not just in the winter. These kinds of ingredients will not only strip skin of its natural oils but also gradually over time cause skin to absorb the ingredients which are known to be harmful to our skin and bodies. Other skin cleanser ingredients to avoid: Parabens, phthalates, propylene glycol, triclosan, DEA, MEA, & TEA, formaldehyde, and toluene.
