What is Crepey Skin?

Crepey skin is the appearance of skin that is lose, dry and wrinkled. It has lost some elasticity and can start to have an appearance of sagging. As we age or when we encounter some of the causes (below) that bring on crepey skin, there is then a marked decrease of elastin and collagen in the skin.

Aging is a natural factor, but there are lifestyle causes and/or health reasons that could be a significant factor.

Causes of Crepey Skin

Decrease in Collagen and Elastin. As we age, our skin naturally slows down production of collagen and elastin. This is the most common cause of crepey skin, and with a little time, effort, and the right actions and ingredients, we can reverse the appearance of crepey skin.

Sun Exposure. Sun exposure can damage skin, which is a significant cause of crepey skin. This is the second most common cause. It’s always best to start wearing a sunscreen at as early of an age as possible and continuing to do so throughout your lifetime. There are some good quality natural options out there, and while a few minutes in the sun every day doesn’t seem damaging, it can accumulate over time.

Dryness. Not only does proper hydration plump up skin and make it look better, but lack of hydration can prevent skin from producing the collagen and elastin our skin so desperately needs. Just like our bodies, our skin does not have infinite energy. If it is busy trying to combat dehydration and dryness, it cannot perform the function of creating more collagen and elastin. Be sure to drink plenty of water and moisturize skin a couple of times a day to alleviate dryness, which will in turn reduce crepey skin.

Environmental. We know that pollution and environmental factors can effect the way out skin looks. Because we cannot generally see pollution, we tend to believe that it isn’t a big factor, but it really can be. Just like carbon dioxide (invisible) is bad for our homes and our health, pollution in the air directly effects our skin. Eating foods with antioxidants and using products with antioxidants can make a hug difference in our ability to control the effects of environmental skin damage.

Health Habits. Eating processed foods, lack of quality sleep, and certain medications can effect the way our skin looks and cause it to look crepey. Other habits that effect the appearance of skin would be smoking and drinking alcohol and soda.

Weight Loss. When someone loses a significant amount of weight, their skin might take on a loose and crepey appearance. With time and proper care, the skin can eventually bounce back to a more suitable fit for our body and lose that crepey texture.

Top Ingredients for Crepey Skin

Retinol. Increases collagen production. Retinol is vitamin A which is a natural ingredient, not to be confused with the prescription drug Retin-A.

Hyaluronic Acid. Has the incredible ability to hydrate and repair skin. Hyaluronic Acid can reduce fine lines and wrinkles, help skin retain moisture, and create a plumping effect. When the skin is properly hydrated, increased skin cell production can occur, since the skin isn't spending it's energy on fighting dehydration. This is one of the key remedies to causes of crepey skin.

Peptides. Will synthesize new collagen and help skin fight the signs of aging. When products with peptides are applied to the skin, it causes skin cells to build collagen and elastin, which is something that slows down as we age.

Glycerin. While glycerin might seem like a common skin care ingredients, it has many hidden talents. It create a much higher level of hydration as an effective humectant and attracts moisturizer and water to the intercellular space of the skin.

Glycolic Acid. Our glycolic acid is of high quality and benefits skin greatly by gently exfoliating layers of the skin to remove hyperpigmentation, the signs of aging, and helps keep pores unclogged which can lead to less breakouts and clearer skin.

Collagen. Our collagen is derived from vegetables. It’s been proven in medical studies that vegan collagen is just as effective as animal based collagen, and can increase skin firmness and elasticity.
