Anti Aging for Eyes Through the Ages (for History Buffs)

Around 60 BC, Cleopatra would take baths in donkey milk to help keep her skin soft and radiant. Unfortunately this would take about 700 donkeys in the stable to maintain such a routine. Milk is a great exfoliant and skin softener. I don’t personally use or consume animal milk products, but if you do, this might be an ingredient to consider when concocting your own skin care treatments at home.

Around 150 AD a doctor devised the first “cold cream” made of olive oil, water, and beeswax, to help loosen dirt on face and cleanse the skin while maintaining some softness.

Around 1600, Elizabethan women place slices of raw meat on their faces to minimize wrinkles. (Yuck).

Around 1700, the women of France use wine on their faces to create a more youthful appearance, which ends up being a good exfoliation option.

1995 the US develops Retin-A, which is devised to treat wrinkles. Because it’s the strongest form of retinol, it’s discovered to make skin look and feel very irritated.

6 Anti Aging Eye Ingredients You Need

Retinol / Vitamin A. There are many value added variations of Retinol, ranging from the active ingredient Vitamin A to Retin-A or Tretinoin (which requires a prescription).  The later tends to be quite harsh and expensive, so you'll greatly benefits for consistent use of a decent dose of topical Vitamin A.

Our eye cream contains retinol (Vitamin A) and does a great job gently infusing delicate eye skin with the right amount of this nutrient to keep eyes looking youthful and helping reverse accumulated damage.

Hyaluronic Acid. Hyaluronic acid has the ability to help skin hold moisturize several times more than without, which is a huge benefit to helping skin look and feel plump and hydrated. When skin is hydrated, it can continue with effective cell production, since it’s not busy and sidetracked trying to fight dehydration.

Peptides. Peptides are amino acids that are the building blocks of certain proteins needed by the skin, like collagen and elastin. Using a serum or moisturizer that contains peptides can lead to firmer, younger-looking skin.

Mineral Sun Protection Ingredients. It’s a proven fact that 90 percent of skin damaged is caused by sun exposure. It’s a great reason to put some thought into incorporating some sunscreen to your skin care routine, preferably one that is formulated with mineral SPF. But as noted below, make sure you find one that feels good around the eyes, and doesn’t cause burning and discomfort.

Niacinamide. Improves skin color, decreases inflammation, improves blotchiness, increase firmness, and can lighten skin per the National Library of Medicine.

Caffeine. Caffeine is soothing, anti-inflammatory and vasoconstrictive, which can decrease redness and puffiness. By narrowing blood vessels and calming skin, caffeine can reduce under-eye bags and give skin the break it needs to work on healing and repairing. It’s like trying to double task: if you’re trying to do two things at once, neither of those things is going to turn out as well as you’d like.

6 Anti Aging Eye Care Tips

Moisturize. Moisturizing is one of the top and obvious things you can do for your upper and lower lids. Just like a piece of fruit or a grape, if they sit out and start to lose moisturizer, they’ll start to dry up. It’s the same with our eye skin. Keeping them hydrated is a key strategy to keeping them looking healthy and feeling supple.

Dot and Tap, Don’t Tug. It’s not uncommon to want to whip through your skin care and cosmetic routine to get on with your day. I have a short and timely routine that I do each morning. I can be finished with everything in 5 minutes if I need to be. But being in a hurry can lead us to drag our fingers and products across our eye area without much thought. Instead, take a few seconds on each eye to dot creams and cosmetics on, and just keep tapping. As long as you keep gently tapping, your products will be properly placed and absorbed so that you can move onto the rest of your face.

Remember Mineral Sunscreen. There are two things I can personally say about this step: Find a non irritating sunscreen you feel you can comfortably put around your eyes without fear of the dreaded stinging that can happen when you touch your eyes throughout the day or when your eyes might tear (allergy season is a big eye tearing time period for me). Once you find a mineral sunscreen that you’re comfortable with, make sure you put a good layer in, or double it up, as I often do if I know I’m heading outside at some point during the day (which I do every day to get my cardio in).

Treat. If you’re confused about where to start with an eye cream or eye product, think about what issues you’d like to improve. That will be a great place to start, in terms of finding a truly healthy, all natural product to address those issues and moisturizer properly.

Exfoliate Properly. Non abrasive exfoliation is the best option for the delicate eye area. You can apply certain kinds of ingredients to the eye area and those layers of skin will eventually and gently cause an exfoliation effect that will help reveal fresher layers of youthful skin.

Keep it Cool. Keep a jade or quartz roller in your freezer or refrigerator to treat the skin around your eyes.  This will help depuff and detox that area, helping you look more awake. .
